Comparing the Bb Major and G minor Blues Scales Together:

The “What Is This?” Demonstration:  Have the class play their concert Bb scale in unison.  Then ask them, in the same way, to play the below exercise as written for each instrument.  Ask the class; “How are the two things you just played similar?”

The answer is, they both contain the notes of the concert Bb scale.  One is in sequence, the other is not.  Ask two additional questions; “Which one sounded better?” and “Why?”  You are looking for the answer that the first one had a recognizable pattern one’s ear could identify.  This example is to demonstrate why the “NO SKIPPING” rule is initially so important for the beginning jazz improviser.
