        The “What Is This?” Demonstration: Have the class play their concert Bb scale in unison. Then ask them, in the same way, to play the below exercise as written for each instrument. Ask the class; “How are the two things you just played similar?” Â
         The answer is, they both contain the notes of the concert Bb scale. One is in sequence, the other is not. Ask two additional questions; “Which one sounded better?” and “Why?” You are looking for the answer that the first one had a recognizable pattern one’s ear could identify. This example is to demonstrate why the “NO SKIPPING” rule is initially so important for the beginning jazz improviser.
