Project Title: “Smooth” By: Carlos Santana - “A” minor (improvising in the key signature of “C” Major)
Instructions: This improvisation project is arranged as a two part (Duet) jazz combo, complete with separate rhythm section (and misc.) parts. The 1st part contains the main melody and is written at a more advanced level of difficulty. The improvisation section at bar #38 is cued (using “slash” notation) in both parts. Chords symbols are also cued, but the soloists can just as easily use the “A” minor scale (NOT “A” minor blues) by improvising using “no sharps, or no flats”, or in the key of concert “C” Major. There are two audio files provided for “play along” purposes. One is playing along with the “vocal lead” while also improvising with great jazz guitar soloist, Carlos Santana. The second MP3 is a “Drum Set Only” track if students want to put their own “combo” together. Student(s) playing the first part will be the only source providing the song’s main melodic content.
As a side note (as before), students can also sit down at ANY keyboard instrument, and reinforce their improvisation playing skills, by soloing only on the white keys.
