Assignment # 37 - Improvising Using the Mixolydian Mode
“Orion’s Belt” in “F” and “G” Mixolydian Modes:
In this “assignment,” we will improvise along with one song using the “F” and “G” Mixolydian modes. What is unique about this particular mode is that it uses the same note sequence as our regular “major” scales. The only difference is the tonic note used for the key in each MP3 version of “Orion’s Belt.” The “F” Mixolydian’s notes are the same as that of a concert “Bb” major scale, and the “G” Mixolydian is the same as concert “C” major. “Orion’s Belt” is from the “K-8 Magazine” collection of educational music, written for elementary and middle school choruses.
