Improvisation Assignment #31
“Chill Out” is a very slow and beautiful “straight 8th note” ballad. It offers another opportunity to explore soloing options for a minor scale. Another “fun” option might be to see if your students (on their own) can come up with the correct notes of a C# minor “blues” scale, which also will work with this song. In addition, it offers the students an opportunity to perform in a key that is rarely used for “wind instruments”. There are no “count offs” in the resource MP3. The entire song is a single eight bar, four chord progression phrase. After the 12 bar introduction, the first soloist should begin and then the solos that follow should alternate every eight measures. I am very sure you will enjoy hearing solos that your young “improvisationalists” come up with. So, sit back, relax, enjoy, and most importantly, “Chill Out”.
